Gardens of Stone | My Boyhood in the French Resistance by Stephen Grady

I thoroughly recommend this book ... a true story of courage and steely determination in the face of adversity.

The writing style is journalistic and does not pull any punches.  It is the first book that I have read that is specifically about the resistance.  What a nightmare it must be to share your country with an enemy; never able to trust your neighbours not to collaborate or to turn you in.

There is a real sense of the bravery and determination on the part of the protagonist.  There is a grim humour to it and the passages about his internment in the prison at Loos are so grisly and full of fear that it made my blood run cold.

My French great-aunts were all engaged to resistance workers, none of whom survived the war - what a tragic waste of life.
